OCYL Digital Media Lab captures literacy in action

The OCYL Digital Media Lab – a CLEF funded organization equipped with professional Digital Video shooting and editing equipment, shot some great footage of the new Early Childhood Literacy Program offered by the Cumberland OCYL. Have a look:

The Digital Media Lab will oversee a host of OCYL programs and projects in Digital Technology and New Media including video, sound recording and editing, graphic and web design and digital photography.  The Cumberland Young Filmmakers Club is part of the DML and is already documenting town life on video.  You’ll be hearing more and more about them and CLEF is thrilled to sponsor their efforts!

Promoting a “Green” Cumberland

TreeThe Cumberland Office of Children Youth and Learning will be discussing its “Green Cumberland” environmental science programs and projects with the CLEF Board of Directors at a future meeting. We’re looking forward to it!

Robotics Mentoring a Big Success!

Earlier this year we funded the purchase of a state-of-the-art student Robotics kit for use by the Cumberland High School Robotics Team.  We requested that, in exchange, those high school students particpate in a mentoring program with younger students interested in robotics.  The high schoolers and their coaches, along with some helpful parents, agreed and for five consectutive Saturday mornings, they worked with students at McCourt Middle School and North Cumberland Middle School, showing them the ins and outs of Robotics competition.  The gatherings were help at the Cumberland Office of Children Youth and Learning (OCYL).  Another round of this wonderful mentoring program will begin soon.  If you have a middle schooler who might be interested, contact the OCYL at 475-0929.  CLEF is encouraging an expansion of this mentoring program to the elementary school level.

*UPDATE*  As a result of their mentoring efforts, the CHS Robotics Team won the state’s “Connect Award” for positive community involvement! They also finished 2nd in the state competition overall.  Congratulations!
